Three DTPB FTP UGM Study Programs Secure ASIIN International Accreditation Through 2030

The Faculty of Agricultural Technology (FTP), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), has once again recorded an achievement at the international level. Three study programs within the Department of Agricultural and Biosystem Engineering (DTPB) the Undergraduate Study Program in Agricultural Engineering, the Master’s Study Program in Agricultural Engineering, and the Doctoral Study Program in Agricultural Engineering Science have officially obtained full ASIIN International Accreditation (Akkreditierungsagentur für Studiengänge der Ingenieurwissenschaften, der Informatik, der Naturwissenschaften und der Mathematik), valid from June 17, 2025, to September 30, 2030. This was announced through a letter from UGM’s Vice-Rector for Education and Teaching dated July 20, 2026, confirming that all three study programs had met the full requirements of ASIIN’s international accreditation.

The achievement is the result of a series of assessment processes that began with a visit from the ASIIN assessor team on February 4–5, 2025. During this process, the assessor team comprising academics and ASIIN representatives conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the education delivered by the Undergraduate Study Program in Agricultural Engineering, the Master’s Study Program in Agricultural Engineering, and the Doctoral Study Program in Agricultural Engineering Science.

During the visit, the assessor team held discussions with UGM leadership, FTP UGM leadership, the management of the Department of Agricultural and Biosystem Engineering, lecturers, students, alumni, and industry partners. The assessment covered a wide range of aspects, from curriculum, the learning process, and study-program governance to human-resource development, partnerships with external collaborators, and alumni involvement in supporting the improvement of education quality.

In addition to holding discussions, the assessor team also reviewed various learning-support facilities owned by UGM, including health facilities, sports facilities, disability services, student dormitories, and the Gelanggang Inovasi dan Kreativitas (Innovation and Creativity Hub/GIK). Within the Department of Agricultural and Biosystem Engineering, the assessors visited five laboratories the Land and Water Resources Engineering Laboratory, the Agricultural Energy and Machinery Laboratory, the Food and Postharvest Engineering Laboratory, the Biophysics Laboratory, and the Environmental Engineering for Agricultural Buildings Laboratory to evaluate the completeness of facilities, laboratory capability, and occupational safety aspects.

In the closing session of the visit, the Chair of the ASIIN Assessor Team, Prof. Dr. Dieter Trautz of Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, expressed his appreciation for the readiness shown by all three study programs throughout the assessment process. The series of evaluations reflects the commitment of FTP UGM’s Department of Agricultural and Biosystem Engineering to maintaining and improving the quality of higher education in line with international standards.

The award of ASIIN international accreditation stands as recognition of the quality of education delivered by FTP UGM’s Department of Agricultural and Biosystem Engineering, while also reinforcing the faculty’s commitment to producing graduates who are competitive at the global level. The achievement is also expected to further expand opportunities for international collaboration, student and lecturer mobility, and the development of competitive education and research.

This achievement also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, through the strengthening of higher-education quality that meets international standards; SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, through improved engineering-education quality that supports innovation; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through the strengthening of international networks and recognition in higher-education development.

FTP UGM Strengthens Global Academic Network through Joint Supervision Agreement with Leiden University

The Faculty of Agricultural Technology (FTP), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), strengthened its international academic network through the signing of a Joint Supervision Agreement with the Institute of Biology, Faculty of Science, Leiden University, on Monday, (20/7) at FTP UGM. The agreement, signed by the Dean of FTP UGM, Prof. Dr. Ir. Eni Harmayani, M.Sc., together with Prof. Dr. Peter J. Punt, Professor at the Institute of Biology, Faculty of Science, Leiden University, marks a step toward expanding collaboration in education, research, and human resource development.

This collaboration provides the basis for joint supervision of master’s students in the Master’s Study Program in Food Science and Technology, and also opens opportunities for cooperation in other areas, such as collaborative research, scientific publications, and knowledge exchange between the two institutions. The signing of the Joint Supervision Agreement began with remarks from the Dean of FTP UGM, who emphasized the importance of international collaboration in supporting the implementation of the university’s tridharma, the three pillars of higher education: teaching, research, and community service. This collaboration is expected to be the starting point for the development of various joint programs, ranging from student supervision and collaborative research to the strengthening of academic networks between FTP UGM and Leiden University.

The series of activities continued with introductory sessions from the Department of Food Technology and Agricultural Products, the Department of Agricultural and Biosystem Engineering, and the Department of Agricultural Industrial Technology. Each department presented its profile, areas of expertise, research focus, and potential collaboration opportunities that could be developed with Leiden University. The discussion also opened up opportunities for cross-disciplinary research synergy, in line with each institution’s respective strengths. The Head of the Department of Food Technology and Agricultural Products, Prof. Dr. Ir. Tyas Utami, M.Sc., welcomed the joint supervision arrangement now running within the Master’s Study Program in Food Science and Technology, and also spoke of broader collaboration opportunities, particularly for undergraduate students: “I sincerely hope that this collaboration can expand to include our undergraduate students, offering opportunities for research stays for their final projects, student exchanges, fast-track programs, and other initiatives currently running with our partners.” The Secretary of the Department of Agricultural and Biosystem Engineering, FTP UGM, Chandra Setyawan, S.T.P., M.Sc., Ph.D., introduced the laboratories within the department and welcomed collaboration opportunities with other institutions, both at Leiden University and within the department’s existing networks relevant to its field. The Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Industrial Technology, FTP UGM, Dr. Anggoro Cahyo Sukartiko, S.T.P., M.P., expressed hope that the collaboration would continue to grow and produce more academic partnerships in the future: “I hope this collaboration will continue to grow, particularly in the field of agricultural technology,” he said.

Through this collaboration, FTP UGM continues to strengthen its commitment to improving the quality of education and research through international collaboration. This activity also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, through the strengthening of higher education and international academic supervision; SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, through the development of collaborative research; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through the strengthening of strategic partnerships between FTP UGM and Leiden University.

Global Perspectives on Sustainable Agriculture and Manufacturing: Insights from Korea and Beyond

This morning, August 9th 2024, at 07.30 Western Indonesia Time (GMT+7), marked the 11th day of the Summer Course (SC) 2024 held by the Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Universitas Gadjah Mada.

There were 4 speakers, 2 online and 2 on-site. The first lecture was on International Agricultural Development and Cooperation from Korea’s Perspective, moderated by Sintia Putri Pradita, M.Sc. from FAT UGM. Taeyoon Kim, Ph.D. from Seoul National University South Korea, explained about agricultural development especially related to GDP per capita with rural populations in Asian countries such as Japan and Korea from 1960 until now. He mentioned an example of food value implemented in the USA and agricultural contributions such as source of labor for the modern sector, saving for investment, foreign exchange through export, etc.      

Before continuing to the next session, we had a coffee break from 09.15-09.45. The second lecture was on Reducing Food Waste with Food Packaging, moderated by Dr. Inasanti Pandan Wangi from FAT UGM. Dr. Nur Alim Bahmid (on-site speaker) from National Research and Innovation Agency of the Republic Indonesia, explained the importance of food packaging to reduce food waste. He then gave some examples of new innovations of packaging to extend product’s shelf life such as Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP), smart packaging, active packaging and intelligent packaging. He mentioned his brief research of antimicrobial packaging from mustard seed extracts to be incorporated in meat packaging.  

The second session ended at 11.30 then we moved to the next session which was lunch break and prayer time. The plenary started at 13.00 for the third lecture on Sustainable Manufacturing. Dr. Novita Sakundarini (on-site speaker) from University of Nottingham Malaysia explained the facts about our planet and current issues about global warming and climate change. She gave understanding about the importance of protecting the Earth and urgency of achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs). She explained the new innovation for sustainable manufacturing such as AI and how industrial sectors such as Toyota, Niki and Ajinomoto implemented those policies in their company.    

The fourth session started after a 30 minute coffee break around 15.15. It was about Agro-industrial Sustainability and Digital Transformation, moderated by Thalia Naziha, M.Sc., MBA from FAT UGM. Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Markus Frank from Nuertingen-Geislingen University, Germany explained the concept of agricultural sustainability by giving participants farming simulation (online exercise) through a website. He explained the biodiversity and intensive agriculture as well as future farming. He mentioned the advantages of a sustainable food system such as high resource efficiency, value orientation, direct contact between producer and consumer, etc.
