This program was organized by Faculty of Agricultural Technology – Universitas Gadjah Mada and UNESCO – IHE Institute of Water Education. The coordinator in UGM was Prof. Dr. Sigit Supadmo Arif and Murtiningrum, M.Sc. as supporting staff and from IHE Delft was Dr. Jaap Evers. The event was conducted on July 23 – 27, 2014 at Universitas Gadjah Mada and field trip and excursion were at surrounding Yogyakarta Special Province and Province of Middle Java. Twenty one participants came from nine Asian countries and came from academia, research institute, private sector, government which dealt with water.
Water Integrity is thought to be a topic of interest and relevance to all alumni of IHE, the topic was therefore also used for the institute wide introduction week to all are freshmen students. However, we think the refresher course is of most interest to alumni in the fields of:
Environmental Sciences - Specialization in Environmental Planning and Management
Water Management - Specialization in Water Resources Management, Water Services Management and Water Conflict Management
Participants were able to critically analyze and use a framework for informed ethical decision making in water management/governance. The following specific learning objectives (LOb) were
formulated, on completion of the course the participants were able to:
a. Critically assess inclusiveness and equity issues of women and other minorities in water governance
b. Critically assess the relation between effective water governance and aspects of water integrity
c. Understand why people behave (im)morally, and are able to reflect on their personal behavior/moral compass
d. Develop ethical arguments based on their moral value system for prioritizing decisions for effective water governance.
Due to the importance role of water integrity management in the future, the same course will be planned to be conducted this year.
